Where2.0Now?

What: 1 day conference #AGI_NG: Where2.0Now?
When: 10th November 2009
Where: Geoplan offices, Bilton Court, Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK (http://tinyurl.com/mfohyu)

Where2.0Now? is a one day (10th November) conference hosted by the [IMAGE_LEFT;event/AGI_grfx.gif]Association for Geographic Information (AGI) Northern Group (#AGI_NG) in partnership with the Centre for Spatial Analysis and Policy (CSAP) at the University of Leeds addressing the current big issue within the GI industry: neo geography and it's impact in the work place. The packed day has speakers confirmed from Google, Microsoft, Ordnance Survey, 1Spatial, GeoVation, CloudMade and Yahoo!. Case studies of neo at work are given by Litchfield Council, Calderdale Council as well as examples from public participation exercises (Manchester University), transport (Ito World) and national archives (GeoThings/New York Public Library). We are especially pleased to be able to announce our key note speaker as Prof. Henk Scholten, CEO of Geodan and recent recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from Jack Dangermond (ESRI President). Henk will be providing us with a longer term perspective on neo geography, and Web2.0 GIS tools and providing the perfect base from which to examine their impact on our daily work. ..If you can't describe what 'Neo' Geography or 'Web2.0' is, or decide if any of it is relevant to your work, then this is the event for you!

The conference is being held at Bilton Court, home to Geoplan, in the wonderful spa town of Harrogate, North Yorkshire. So why not make a trip of it and take advantage of our post conference networking drinks event?

Places are strictly limited; early booking is recommended. Full conference details can be found on the AGI website (www.agi.org.uk/events) . We host a programme of monthly seminars across the region as well as workshops and social events giving people the opportunity to network and catch up on what's happening across the industry. As a group we are active in engaging other organisations to a) broaden our perspective, and b) introduce others to the AGI. To that end we share resources with the Geographic Association, the British Computing Society (Geomatics), the Universities of Manchester and Leeds, and various regional government GI associations such as Yorkshire Futures. Further information can be found at www.agi.org.uk/sig/aginorth

What is CSAP?
Is a research group that focuses on advanced spatial analysis. With strong links within academic research and commercial sectors, they have undertaken nationally significant studies (further information can be found here: http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/research/csap/projects.html) on topics ranging from demographics to urban planning, from education to climate change. There is an obvious interest in any new technologies that potentially remove the barriers to massive data sets!

MapInfo Foundation Level Training at CDR Group

The Foundation course is designed for people who will be using MapInfo Professional on a day to day basis. The focus of the course is on basic operations, and how to find and use the MapInfo tools to carry them out. The course is designed as a series of modules covering different aspects of MapInfo Professional use, and each session uses a worked example for delegates to follow on their own PC's. Delegates are provided with a full training manual which may be kept for future reference.

The course is designed for new users or for those who have been using the software for a short time, who have some knowledge of using other Windows based packages. The aim of the session is to be as 'non-technical' as possible, while providing students with all the information required to start using MapInfo effectively.

Throughout the course examples from realistic business cases are used, and there is an opportunity at the end of the course for students to discuss the specifics of their business case with the trainer.

What other delgates have said:

'Excellent course, filled in all the gaps in my knowledge of the software and more, well presented course made easy to understand through good instructions, excellent study environment and good teacher'

'Very relevant, everything well explained, pleasant working environment, very relaxed and easy to ask questions'

'The best course I've been on for interest, presentation of course and fulfilling my expectations. Didn't get bored once, despite having used MapInfo regularly. Definitely be back for the advanced. Thanks.'

'Very good - would recommend it to all - this is excellent stuff. Made a lot of sense.'
Foundation Course Topics

Starting-up and displaying data
How to start MapInfo and display data as maps, 'browsers' (tables) and graphs and then save data as 'workspaces', ready to use another time.

Working with data and using the toolbars
Familiarise yourself with MapInfo's tools and learn to manipulate which information displays and how. Learn about the basic map and graph viewing tools and the browser techniques that allow you to view your data in a clear and understandable manner. Use the navigation tools to manipulate the view of the map.

Performing queries
Understand the practical usage of queries to select sub-sets of data in both browser and map windows.

Creating tables
Learn how to set up a new table and populate it with data. This encompasses setting the table structure and the map projection, as well as managing changes to the data.

Drawing objects
First learn how to use the map object drawing tools, then use your new skills to link map graphics to the records in a table. This section looks in detail at the skills required for accurate 'heads-up' digitisation of data.

Create thematic maps
Thematic maps allow you to geographically visualise trends and patterns in information by displaying variables against a relevant geographical background.

Geocoding data
Discover how to assign a geographic location to a data record so that it can be viewed as a point on a map.

Create buffers
See how creating buffers around map objects provides you with a way of performing analyses on a specified area of focus.

Creating output
Explore the various methods for creating output: direct printing; saving a window as a bitmap or Windows Metafile; creating and printing a report; Object Linking and Embedding; creating a 'layout' window.

This course is delivered by a qualified and experienced IT Trainer and MapInfo Product Specialist.

Participation in this Training Course carries 6 points towards AGI
Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
This course may count as CPD time for members of other professional bodies including the following:

MapInfo v10.0 Migration Training Course at CDR Group

The release of MapInfo Professional version 10.0 in 2009 has introduced some huge changes to the interface and Layer Control, which lies at the core of the operation of this software application. CDR has taken the steps to design a one day course to help users of previous versions migrate their skills over to the new version. The intention is to give each delegate the information required to effectively utilise the newer features in version 10. Many of these new features are aimed at working more efficiently and you should see many tasks taking less time to perform.

Whilst attendance on the MapInfo Foundation course (MI2) is useful it is by no means required. However a working knowledge of MapInfo Professional is fundamental (e.g. How to open and close files, dealing with multiple windows, layer control etc)

Throughout the course we use examples from realistic business cases, and there is an opportunity at the end of the course for students to discuss the specifics of their business case with the trainer.

The course covers all aspects of the new features and explains where you may gain advantage. Previous version releases of MapInfo Professional have not really warranted a full day training but it is obvious from our experience and user feedback that this release is worthy of spending time getting to grips with it.

Like all of CDR's training courses the Version 10 Migration course is fully 'hands on' with each delegate using a dedicated PC with the latest software versions installed. Comprehensive course notes are issued to each delegate at the start of the course for no extra cost.

AGI Local Government SIG Event - 17th November 2009

Place matters: Location based data and the CAA

This year's AGI local government event will focus on how location based data and geographic information services can be used to help improve the effectiveness of local public service delivery and influence Comprehensive Area Assessments (CAA). [snip]

CAA is a new way of assessing local public services in England. It examines how well councils and other public bodies work together to meet the needs of the people they serve. This, coupled with the new UK Locations Strategy, and the EU Directive on spatial information sharing (INSPIRE) mean we all have to rethink how we use location based data for far greater effect than ever before.

CAA will look at what matters locally, reflecting the priorities of local communities, political leaders and service chiefs. It may cover issues like reducing health inequalities, increasing affordable housing, reducing the fear of crime, improving education, attracting investment or reducing the area's carbon footprint. The issues assessed in each area will reflect local priorities for improving quality of life and protecting the most vulnerable. This means anything from reducing the fear of crime to attracting new investors to the area.

The use of location based information linked with customer insight data is crucial in helping to understand the needs of our local communities. This event will examine how Swindon Borough Council and others have begun to successfully implement intelligence sharing with its key partners across the borough and how GIS is being used to analyse the data. This is a high level event aimed at those who have little knowledge of the issues now facing us.

Speakers from Swindon Borough Council and the LGA will talk about the process of developing the intelligence network and how it is being used; speakers from Warwickshire and Lichfield local authorities will explain through first-hand experience how CAA has been successfully implemented and how GIS is used to aid in its effectiveness.

CPD
Please note that as a delegate at this event you can allocate 4 points towards the AGI continuing professional development scheme.
