KOREC / Trimble GeoSpatial demonstration days

Customised introductions to Trimble's GeoSpatial Mobile Data Capture Systems

Details: KOREC is delighted to announce that it is now taking bookings for the KOREC / Trimble GeoSpatial Presentation days which will be running between the 1st and the12th of February at KOREC's Huntingdon Operations centre in Cambridgeshire.

Trimble's GeoSpatial[MEMBERS_IMAGE_RIGHT;a317340.jpg;KOREC / Trimble GeoSpatial demonstration days] systems are incredibly flexible, with a variety of hardware and sensor choices available, which is why KOREC is inviting all companies who have an interest in mobile survey, GIS & Asset Management or Pavement Inspection to call and arrange a tailor made demonstration of the system.

Vehicle mounted, Trimble's GeoSpatial systems help you complete video logging, asset management, and mobile survey faster and more productively, accurately, and safely. A scalable solution, these systems offer automatic feature extraction, high accuracy long range lasers and are among the only mobile systems available where development work for both hardware systems integration and post-processing software can be done completely in-house, cutting out the need for any costly third party software developers.

Trimble's GeoSpatial division have over twenty years of experience integrating GNSS and GNSS augmentation systems, inertial, DMI, cameras, laser scanners and other sensors into mobile mapping systems and have over 50 systems installed world-wide. Ken Spratlin, general manager of Trimble's GeoSpatial division stated,'Trimble Mobile Data Capture Systems allow service providers and infrastructure managers to access data about the roadway environment accurately and efficiently, with increased worker safety. This complements other survey and mapping tools, allowing our customers to become more productive and improve their businesses'.

MapInfo Foundation Level Training at CDR Group

The Foundation course is designed for people who will be using MapInfo Professional on a day to day basis. The focus of the course is on basic operations, and how to find and use the MapInfo tools to carry them out. The course is designed as a series of modules covering different aspects of MapInfo Professional use, and each session uses a worked example for delegates to follow on their own PC's. Delegates are provided with a full training manual which may be kept for future reference.

The course is designed for new users or for those who have been using the software for a short time, who have some knowledge of using other Windows based packages. The aim of the session is to be as 'non-technical' as possible, while providing students with all the information required to start using MapInfo effectively.

Throughout the course examples from realistic business cases are used, and there is an opportunity at the end of the course for students to discuss the specifics of their business case with the trainer.

What other delgates have said:

'Excellent course, filled in all the gaps in my knowledge of the software and more, well presented course made easy to understand through good instructions, excellent study environment and good teacher'

'Very relevant, everything well explained, pleasant working environment, very relaxed and easy to ask questions'

'The best course I've been on for interest, presentation of course and fulfilling my expectations. Didn't get bored once, despite having used MapInfo regularly. Definitely be back for the advanced. Thanks.'

'Very good - would recommend it to all - this is excellent stuff. Made a lot of sense.'
Foundation Course Topics

Starting-up and displaying data
How to start MapInfo and display data as maps, 'browsers' (tables) and graphs and then save data as 'workspaces', ready to use another time.

Working with data and using the toolbars
Familiarise yourself with MapInfo's tools and learn to manipulate which information displays and how. Learn about the basic map and graph viewing tools and the browser techniques that allow you to view your data in a clear and understandable manner. Use the navigation tools to manipulate the view of the map.

Performing queries
Understand the practical usage of queries to select sub-sets of data in both browser and map windows.

Creating tables
Learn how to set up a new table and populate it with data. This encompasses setting the table structure and the map projection, as well as managing changes to the data.

Drawing objects
First learn how to use the map object drawing tools, then use your new skills to link map graphics to the records in a table. This section looks in detail at the skills required for accurate 'heads-up' digitisation of data.

Create thematic maps
Thematic maps allow you to geographically visualise trends and patterns in information by displaying variables against a relevant geographical background.

Geocoding data
Discover how to assign a geographic location to a data record so that it can be viewed as a point on a map.

Create buffers
See how creating buffers around map objects provides you with a way of performing analyses on a specified area of focus.

Creating output
Explore the various methods for creating output: direct printing; saving a window as a bitmap or Windows Metafile; creating and printing a report; Object Linking and Embedding; creating a 'layout' window.

This course is delivered by a qualified and experienced IT Trainer and MapInfo Product Specialist.

Participation in this Training Course carries 6 points towards AGI
Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
This course may count as CPD time for members of other professional bodies including the following:

Gazetteer Best Practice Day

Gazetteer Best Practice Day in Association with GEO:connexion UK

With technology infusing every aspect of our working lives it has never been more essential to make sure that the software we are using is the very best available. Efficient software however is only part of the equation and it is the understanding and use of that software that lies at the very heart of 'Best Practice'.

The Gazetteer Best Practice Day is designed to give a comprehensive introduction to Gazetteer Best Practice through the first hand experiences those that regularly use gazetteers. With presentations from a variety of different organisations there will be an exploration of core management functions through to the linking of data within and between systems in order to deliver joined up services.

Those attending will gain the opportunity to explore best practice not only with the speakers but with a number of other gazetteer custodians from around the country.

AGI Education Round Table - 25th February 2010

INVITATION issued by the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) to all involved with, or interested in, Geographic Information within Higher Education.

We would like to invite you to an AGI GIS higher-education (HE) round table on 25th February, 2pm - 5pm in London at the Institute for Economic Science (http://www.schooleconomicscience.org/).
Attendance is free to all participants.

[hyperlink;/form.asp?formsrc=event-register1.xml&aevent=Education+Event&aloc=London&adate=25+February+2010&mprice=£00.00&nprice=£00.00;This is a free event: register here]

Address
School of Economic Science
11 Mandeville Place
London
W1U 3AJ

The aim of the round table is to discuss the following issues:

What are the most prominent problems of the HE sector for which coordination at the level of the AGI will be most beneficial?

What would the HE sector like to see the AGI doing on their behalf?

What are the best ways to encourage life-long learning and enrolment to continual professional development programmes? Is the HE sector interested in providing courses as part of CPD?

Is there a benefit in setting up an AGI Education Special Interest Group to act as an umbrella forum for GIS in the HE sector to help with relevant activities and events?

You may have other views and ideas. This meeting is an opportunity to share these and shape the future of the collaboration between the AGI and HE sector

The success of GIS over the past decade has led to an increase in the number of stakeholders and activities in higher education (HE). There are now a large number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in GIS. We believe that there are over 19 MSc courses dedicated to GIS and many more that include a GIS element.

The Association for Geographic Information (AGI) is the leading organisation for all those with an interest or involvement with GI. It has been active since 1989. A number of universities, HE institutions and students are members of the AGI and receive the benefits associated with that membership. Recently, AGI has formed an Education Action Working Group to review the benefits that AGI can offer the higher education sector. It now wishes to involve those who do relevant work within HE, or who have an interest in the provision of GI within the education sector, to have an input into discussions about the benefits that AGI can deliver to individuals and institutions within that sector.

There have been rapid changes in the GI industry in the past 5 years. The increase in the use of Web 2.0 mapping is changing the industry in a profound way. If HE institutions are going to educate students to assist them to gain jobs at the end of their studies, those who design and teach within HE need to be in close contact with the wider GIS industry in the UK to understand the needs and conditions of the job market. There is an increasing need for students to be exposed to the commercial environment that they will encounter after their studies. The AGI membership can help the HE sector in establishing such links. With the growing pressure on universities to demonstrate 'impacts' of research and the growing demand from research funding bodies to demonstrate working with industry, the AGI is one of the forums in which research output can be disseminated and new contacts for future projects can be forged.

We would be keen to hear from those of you who are AGI members about what AGI are doing well and what we could additionally do for HE to give you added value from your membership. And we are extending this invitation beyond the membership of AGI (for example, MSc course Directors) in order to find out what we might be able to do to encourage other HE institutions to join the AGI and work with us on delivering benefits to you in meeting your educational responsibilities.

This event is sponsored by ESRI (UK).
