Venue: Eccles House, Eccles Lane, Hope, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 6RW

The two-day Foundation course is designed for people who will be using MapInfo Professional on a day to day basis. The focus of the course is on basic operations, and how to find and use the MapInfo tools to carry them out. The course is designed as a series of modules covering different aspects of MapInfo Professional use, and each session uses a worked example for delegates to follow on their own PC's. Delegates are provided with a full training manual which may be kept for future reference.

The course is designed for new users or for those who have been using the software for a short time, who have some knowledge of using other Windows based packages. The aim of the session is to be as 'non-technical' as possible, while providing students with all the information required to start using MapInfo effectively.

Throughout the course examples from realistic business cases are used, and there is an opportunity at the end of the course for students to discuss the specifics of their business case with the trainer.

What other delegates have said:

'Excellent course, filled in all the gaps in my knowledge of the software and more, well presented course made easy to understand through good instructions, excellent study environment and good teacher'

'Very relevant, everything well explained, pleasant working environment, very relaxed and easy to ask questions'

'The best course I've been on for interest, presentation of course and fulfilling my expectations. Didn't get bored once, despite having used MapInfo regularly. Definitely be back for the advanced. Thanks.'

'Very good - would recommend it to all - this is excellent stuff. Made a lot of sense.'

Foundation Course Topics

• Starting-up and displaying data
How to start MapInfo and display data as maps, 'browsers' (tables) and graphs and then save data as 'workspaces', ready to use another time.
• Working with data and using the toolbars
Familiarise yourself with MapInfo's tools and learn to manipulate which information displays and how. Learn about the basic map and graph viewing tools and the browser techniques that allow you to view your data in a clear and understandable manner. Use the navigation tools to manipulate the view of the map.
• Performing queries
Understand the practical usage of queries to select sub-sets of data in both browser and map windows.
• Creating tables
Learn how to set up a new table and populate it with data. This encompasses setting the table structure and the map projection, as well as managing changes to the data.
• Drawing objects
First learn how to use the map object drawing tools, then use your new skills to link map graphics to the records in a table. This section looks in detail at the skills required for accurate 'heads-up' digitisation of data.
• Create thematic maps
Thematic maps allow you to geographically visualise trends and patterns in information by displaying variables against a relevant geographical background.
• Geocoding data
Discover how to assign a geographic location to a data record so that it can be viewed as a point on a map.
• Create buffers
See how creating buffers around map objects provides you with a way of performing analyses on a specified area of focus.
• Creating output
Explore the various methods for creating output: direct printing; saving a window as a bitmap or Windows Metafile; creating and printing a report; Object Linking and Embedding; creating a 'layout' window.

This course is delivered by a qualified and experienced IT Trainer and MapInfo Product Specialist.

Participation in this Training Course carries 6 points towards AGI
 Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
This course may count as CPD time for members of other professional bodies including the following:
 ICE, RICS, LI, ICES.

EuroSDR Workshop on PostGIS DBMS

Invitation to Participate

Background
Use by NMCA’s and other data providers of the open source PostGIS technology (http://postgis.refractions.net/), and the PostgreSQL database which PostGIS spatially enables, is on the increase. It is extensively used at IGN France and at EDINA (the organisation that electronically delivers OS data to the UK academic community - http://edina.ac.uk/digimap/description/). Other NMCA’s such as KMS Denmark plan to migrate to PostGIS and others are at an investigative stage.
The motivations for considering the adoption of PostgreSQL / PostGIS are both generic and GI specific:

The generally perceived benefits of Open Source in terms of cost saving and political acceptability

Economic benefits particularly in the Cloud Computing context and in providing generally accessible delivery mechanisms (where the pricing models of some mainstream database technologies are unfavorable)

The increasing maturity and capability of the GI functionality in PostGIS.

Increasing support for PostgreSQL / PostGIS by GIS software suppliers.

However the decision to change database technology is a very significant one and many issues have to be addressed and dealt with satisfactorily (lifetime cost, functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, relationship with wider plans to rationalise/enhance existing infrastructure….). Hence organisations contemplating such a course may have an interest in sharing experience and knowhow.

Workshop Objectives

To discuss the Pro’s and Con’s of adopting PostgreSQL / PostGIS

To share the experience of established users

To hear from PostGIS developers of capabilities and developments

To discuss future plans and possibilities for collaborations

Audience

System architects

Database managers

Business/market development staff

Related researchers and technology providers.

Outline Programme
Sessions are planned as follows
1. An overview of PostgreSQL / PostGIS and its place in spatial system architectures
2. Experience of existing users
3. Inputs from PostGIS developers
4. Future plans and collaborations
Break out Sessions to be determined

Timing and Venue
The workshop will take place between lunchtime on Wednesday 23 May and lunchtime Thursday 24 May 2012 at the Headquarters building of the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain at Southampton: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/about-us/how-to-find-us.html.
There will be a Workshop dinner.

Registration and Fee
Registration is free. Delegates will be responsible for their hotel expenses. Delegates should register through online at http://eurosdrworkshoponpostgisdbms.eventbrite.co.uk/ where there are also details of local hotels

Programme Committee
Peter Woodsford (Chair) – formerly President EuroSDR Commission 5
Ian James (Ordnance Survey GB)

Further Details
Will be announced via www.eurosdr.net as they become available.

Proposals for presentations are still invited and potential presenters should submit a short abstract to the Programme Committee Chair at consultancy.woodsford@ntlworld.com by 31 March 2012

1Spatial:Socium - Supply Chain Simplification

One of the most complex and costly aspects of the spatial data supply chain is the quality assurance process and this is where Socium's Online Validation Service can considerably save both time and money.

Join us for this free 45 minute webinar to see a live demonstration of the Service and find out how the Online Validation Service can provide real value and benefit to your organisation by underpinning and automating your quality assurance process.

Find out how it can:
• enable you to set quality standards and ensure suppliers are meeting those standards
• reduce your time and costs by eliminating the cycle of submitted data being rejected and returned to the supplier due to quality standards not being met
• standardise data quality at all levels in the supply chain and greatly reduce all future quality assurance tasks
• significantly reduce your data production and delivery timescales
• provide all suppliers with an easy to use, automated validation environment, requiring no infrastructure or software purchase thus dramatically reducing the quality assurance overhead
• ensure that all suppliers are validating their data against the same independent validation tool and to the validation criteria you want to set.

We look forward to welcoming you along to join us for this session.

Speakers: Sung-Hyun Jang and Andrew Hudson-Smith, CASA, University College London

The last two years have seen a turning point in terms of bringing geographically aware augmented reality to mobile devices. Significant developments in locational technology such as the inclusion of a built-in digital compass, GPS (Global Positioning System) and accelerometers into mobile phones have allowed not only location but also heading, and pitch to be detected and therefore incorporated into data display systems. These built-in technologies have brought augmented reality to the hands of the masses, and the phones themselves have sparked a market driven boom in fusing augmented reality with location-based services (LBS). Currently applications are in their infancy and mainly focused on specific topics such as ‘show me where the closest x is’. This however represents the tip of the iceberg with the addition of GIS into the mix there is notable potential for the industry.

Venue: Eccles House, Eccles Lane, Hope, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 6RW

The two-day advanced course is designed to develop the user's knowledge of MapInfo beyond the simple definition of the commands. The intention is to aid the student in using MapInfo to develop effective analysis and reporting techniques through hands-on use of the software. The course is aimed specifically at users who will be responsible for the administration of data and those who will be called upon by others to generate maps and queries or to those who wish to support other MapInfo Professional users. Delegates are provided with a full training manual that may be kept for future reference. Attendance on the Foundation course is recommended but by no means statutory.

Throughout the course we use examples from realistic business cases, and there is an opportunity at the end of the course for students to discuss the specifics of their business case with the trainer.

NB The Advanced level course does not cover the basic tools and operations required to use MapInfo. Those applicants who are not yet fully conversant with the location and effect of each of the MapInfo tools should first attend our Foundation Training course.

Advanced Applications Course Topics

• An Introduction to workspaces
A brief look at workspaces, and the MapBasic window.
• Advanced SQL queries
This part of the course develops the use of SQL beyond simple find and select statements to sub-queries including the use of join statements.
• Geographic analysis techniques
Basic concepts of spatial analysis, with consideration to the types of enquiry relevant to modern business use. This section builds on the use of SQL to include the geographic operators.
• Advanced thematic mapping
Thematic mapping is a powerful communicator of ideas and concepts behind data. This part of the course introduces concepts of thematic mapping designed to enhance the communication of these ideas. Including using more than one variable (multi-variate) to generate the thematic.
• Object Editing
Advanced techniques to aggregate data geographically and to divide data.
• Using DBMS/ODBC to exchange data
Using Windows ODBC allows powerful links to be created with remote databases. Working with an Access database, the Database Management System routine and SQL queries are used to plot data directly into MapInfo.
• Using raster and AutoCAD images
MapInfo allows raster images to be opened, but can also be used to register these geographically so that they work with vector data. AutoCAD drawings can also be imported into MapInfo.

Quotes from previous Advanced Course delegates:

'Very helpful and interesting.'

'Great course, fulfilled all expectations and more all in a great location.'

'All topics covered, nothing left out or rushed. Plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Built on the entry level course to a great degree'

'Very useful and enjoyable course. The pace, examples and hands on content just about perfect. Picked up a lot of useful tricks & shortcuts which I will be able to apply back at work.'

'A very useful course that brings in several complex themes without being too scary! .I am very grateful!'

'Excellent presentation of subject and willingness to answer all questions quickly'

Participation in this Training Course carries 7 points towards AGI Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
This course may count as CPD time for members of other professional bodies including the following:
 ICE, RICS, LI, ICES
